RoofTop Gardening: How to start

The tendency to reap the benefits from the roof gardens is increasing. Many people are getting inspiration for gardening on the rooftop to ensure health awareness and the benefits of obtaining safe fruit vegetables.

Many men and women are interested in creating a rooftop garden in need of leisure entertainment.

The students of the school-college came to the roof garden and came in contact with the plants and enjoyed the exquisite pleasure. Many tree lovers are deliberately gardening on their own roofs, expressing the joy of creation and love of plants.

A beautiful rooftop garden can provide a clean environment and safe fruits for the needs of families throughout the year.

Roof size and location:

Roof size can be small, medium or large. Considering this size, it is necessary to determine at the outset what part of the roof, what, how many different fruits, vegetables, spices, and medicinal plants can be cultivated.

Regardless of the fixed terrace, how many floors of buildings or large plants are there in the vicinity, there is a need to create a garden to take advantage of the light and wind throughout the day.

The effect of the storm-wind is higher if the roof position is too high. This is why it is not advisable to plant fruit trees on the roof of a larger size. In such a situation, trees are more likely to fall, to break branches, to fall fruit. For this reason, it is better not to leave the tree to grow higher up.

In addition, decoration of roof gardens should be preferred with trees that are low height and grow laterally. For the same reason, such a tall tree of banana, papaya is better not to plant on a high roof. The heat or sunshine on the roof is higher than that of the sun. This is because of direct sunlight and its reflection. For this reason, in creating a roof garden, a fit environment can be created for the rooftop tree by fitting 4-5% sun-resistant dense net at 5-7 feet.

How to Start Roof Gardening:

Many people first start roof gardening by planting small tubs of various kinds. However, it is not possible to make a breakthrough in this system. For this, the roots of the tree planted on the roof should be spread out and a large number of trees can be planted, but no damage to the roof should be taken at the beginning.

Creating Boxes:

Most roof gardening roofs are 2-5 feet wide and 2-5 feet high, making boxes and filling them with potting media and planting trees on them. Many made the box with a gap of 8-12 inches below the mold and strengthen it. Someone made the lower part of the box 2-5 inches high and molded the part directly over it and made a long box similar to the low cost. Alternatively make tin / plastic structures or collect ship-sized bathtub-shaped utensils and use them as boxes / tubs.

Filling box / tub with potting media: Dung is usually collected from the nursery for mixing soil and used for planting. Since there is little chance of spreading the roots of the trees planted in the rooftop garden such as cropland, it is necessary to provide good quality potting media and drainage of the lower part and simply spread the roots of the tree.
Here's how different layers of the box can be adapted:

A. The first part of the floor: 3rd-grade brick filled with small cut/cut pieces 3-5 inches;
B. Fill the second layer with wood coal, 2-5 inches thick on top of it;
C. The third layer is 2-5 inches thick with coconut sticks or coconut sticks;
D. 4th level 2-6 inches thick sandstone (Sylhet Sand) or small stone fill with brick/brick chips;
E. The roof will be more suitable for garden plants if the bottom or upper part is filled with good quality potting media.

Methods of making potting media: Ready-made potting media made mainly from Pittsmills, Pitswell, and Organics (compost) abroad are available in various local nurseries. Different media are available for any kind of tree to be planted. The following is a proportionate rate of what is available in this country for the production of good quality media:

A. Cocodest or coconut powder - 20%
B. Thick sand (Sylhet Sand) - 5%
C. Wet soil (available in nurseries) - 20%
D. Harvested rotten / rotten cow - 5%
E. Third-grade brick miniature chips/mules - 5%

Mix them well and fill the remaining part of the box/tub and plant them in it. The tree will grow faster, yield more. It is best to use some amount of sawdust, vermicompost or reliable compost produced by a reliable company with the media and mix some bone powder and oil with it.

Planting trees on rooftops:

The importance of collecting healthy varieties of healthy saplings/pens from reliable sources in roof gardening is of immense importance. The long-term and mid-term fruit trees that will be planted in this garden are good if they are perennial varieties.

Otherwise, it should be planted with varieties of fruit that are available for 3-6 months. It is not advisable to select tree trunks that have a very short time (litchi). The garden should be arranged in such a way that it always maintains a state of flower-bearing fruit on some trees.

Common Fruit Varieties

Among the fruit trees suitable for roof gardening: mango, exotic jackfruit (ginger, colorless varieties that produce fruit after two years of planting), guava, perennial lemon (paper, seedless, cardamom), orange, Pomegranate, etc.
